Weights & Measures

Thomas B. Maynard, Sealer of Weights & Measures

  1. The mission of the Weights & Measures Section is to provide “Equity in the Marketplace”. We attempt to provide a level field of competition for merchants to conduct their business and seek to guarantee no monetary injury to buyer or seller in commercial transactions.
  2. To achieve these goals, our personnel:
    1. Test the accuracy of scales, gas pumps, taxi meters, linear measures, etc.
    2. Examine pre-packaged commodities for adequate fill and proper labeling.
    3. Check scanning systems to ensure that charges recorded by cash registers coincide with posted prices.
    4. Investigate consumer inquiries of suspect transactions.

2012 Annual Reports

  • The Weights & Measures Section inspected and tested 12,270 measuring devices (scales, gas pumps, taximeters, laundry dryers, parking clocks, vacuums, car washes, and vehicle tank meters) in 2012. 308 devices were rejected and taken out of commercial use until repaired, 282 were faulty re-inspections, and 293 were regular re-inspections.
